HYPEREGO
Video, 5min 09s, Massage chair, 60 x 49 x 125 cm
In the immersive video installation «HYPEREGO,» viewers are
invited to explore the intriguing intersection of genetics, memory,
and data storage through a fictional narrative. The installation
features a five-minute video that delves into the realm of
epigenetics—the study of biological mechanisms that will switch
genes on and off, influencing how cells read genes without
changing the DNA sequence itself. This scientific backdrop
sets the stage for a speculative exploration into using DNA as
a potential medium for data storage, particularly focusing on
the vast swathes of non-coding DNA whose functions are only
beginning to be decrypted.
The narrative video portrays a foreign entity embedded within
the genes, seeking out memories of various natures. Styled
with elements reminiscent of guided meditations, New Age
philosophies, and internet-fueled conspiracy theories, the
video aims to engage and provoke viewers into questioning the
boundaries between science and pseudoscience, memory and
identity.
Accompanying the video is a massage chair adorned with
psychedelic patterns, equipped with an integrated headset. This
setup is designed to enhance viewer engagement, focusing
attention on the video’s content and the accompanying pre-recorded
narrative. The choice of a massage chair as part of the
installation plays into the themes of relaxation and receptivity,
setting a contrasting backdrop to the intellectually stimulating and
potentially unsettling themes explored in the video.
